He did PM me, and he wasn't nasty, but didn't seem to want to discuss the matter reasonably. Nobody scared Lansing. Nor did anybody run him off. He insisted it was his way or the highway, and I refused to do what I knew would be wrong just because he insisted it had to be that way. So he chose the highway.

That thread was turning into something that was doing more to detract from the issues he wanted addressed than aid them. I refused to help him torpedo his own crusade. So he left. I'm sorry to see him go, but I'm not sorry about what I did. I'm just sorry I couldn't get through to him why his precious thread was doing his cause more harm than good. I did try. I was hoping he'd actually make those other, fresh suggestions he claimed he had. But he wasn't willing unless it was done his way. His way would have just seen those suggestion dismissed out of hand without even being carefully considered, because of how and where they were presented. But, whatever. Water under the bridge at this point...

It's the long term view that's guiding the current policy. It's a lot easier to prevent any site from degenerating than it is to try to fix it after it happens. A lot of what people would like to see done differently than is being done is stuff that might work fine right now, but isn't going to work in the long run. Lansing was so sure he knew more than the rest of us about what the long term impact of certain moderation styles is. I find that a little amusing. For the record, the first forums I ever moderated were on Terminus BBS in the Twin Cities (612) back in 1985. Lansing was two years old at the time. A lot of the moderators here have more experience than I do, or at least more recent experience. I have a bit more faith in their assessments of the long term impact of certain decisions than he did.

Anyhow, that's my last word on the whole Lansing affair, and on that particular thread closing. If someone wants to suggest new, fresh ideas on how to deal with the flood of new users and the problems it brings, make a new thread for it. I don't oppose discussion of the problem, but we need positive suggestions, not negatives and blame. We know there are problems with the way things are, they don't need to be pointed out yet again, what we need, if there is to be any change, is a better alternative. I'm all for more suggestions on the issue, just not in that thread, and not if it's just rehashing of what was already said there.

Just to clear things up, since this is my last day checking my PM's and someone notified me of this post. I didn't want any misgivings but you create a tall telltale DreamSmith. I agreed that the topic was sidetracked... but we both know closing a topic didn't solve the problem. I mentioned the idea of opening a new similar topic again, one that hopefully wouldn't get sidetracked. You didn't. I couldn't open a new topic without the fear of being banned for repeating the same topic.. so you shut off my voice. And by the way, it's not one of those my way or the highway scenarios you make it out to be. I'd be lying if I said I didn't care that you closed the thread. I do. Sin was right about you, you've always got to get the last word in. I just wanted to clear up any misconceptions about me. This is not a ruse, not a my way or the highway. As I told a couple of members who asked me, some forums discriminate against certain people. It's the way of the world. Not one forum, is going to be for every person. But that doesn't mean a forum should try. Oh, and whoever made the comment about giving up.. yes I agree. But I just don't have the time and effort to give anymore. This was my resignation, and an informative post on my leavings to all the friends I made here. Dreamsmith you can make all the personal attacks you want. We disagreed and using my posted birthdate doesn't make you wiser or more experienced than me or anyone else... you were wrong in doing what you did. There were alternatives, but you didn't want to take them.

P.S. I hate when people perfrom character assassination. This wasn't about what I wanted, it's about many legitimate posts being handled in a very hrm... rude fashion. And I just noted from experience, this is what kills forums. If you had any experience you'd know the same. I do agree with you not reopening the thread (THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANTED) that would be admitting your wrong. And it doesn't matter how wrong you are, I understand (hmmm maybe by experience), that you have to have a united front to those you lead. One cannot change the actions of another anymore than you can take back amistake you performed. Just to clear misconceptions.... and I'm not calling you out. Or trying to point fingers, what you did was stupid... not you as a person but the action in itself. You're a human being, but you knew the consequences before you did it, and it's my firm belief (and I'm sure just about anyone who reads that thread), you were doing it just to provoke a response like this.

P.P.S. And Spooky, you're absolutely right. Not one forum is for everyone.. you're going to alienate people. It just turned out that this isn't the one for me. The post was on an informative basis, and I only responded due to the character assassination by Dreamsmith... a moderator. I didn't want users believing untruthful things. Please feel free to use any PM's I sent anyone if this continues. This is my last day to answer messages also (as I put in the original post). Hope to see you all in Guild Wars. And don't take this as imminent demise, I just meant that you're alienating far too many people (as Spooky said)... and should watch out.

Lansing Kai Don, nobody tries to get rid of you. Leaving the forum is your decision so I can't see why you have to blame it on anyone.
Posts get locked. It's a fact. If your post was locked it doesn't mean you are to blame. Some perfectly reasonable posts can have completely idiotic replies.

Also, I am not trying to get on anyone's side. I had no grudges with any of the mods nor with you, Lansing Kai Don. I read the Closed Topic On Closing Topics and I see it as the longest, most confusing jumble of gumbo I've seen.
